Kind of a long thread but it wasn’t enough for a general written response:
Hi Readers and thinkers alike,
As a person who believes in freedom of speech, I did hear what happened to Vaush and Hasan Piker being banned off Twitch yesterday. Defending speech sometimes isn't pretty. It doesn't help you gain any sides. But principles are the key. I don't particularly care for Vaush and Hasan Piker, and them being banned should fill me with glee. It doesn't. But for both men who abide by strict rules, I can't help but defend their right to speech. Considering that "cracker" is the most lame term when it comes to white people, and white people often laugh at it now. They have the right to freedom of speech, and while they may hate me, I live by principles, not by ideology. I realize they may hate me and it's fine. I accept that. But freedom of speech matters because debate is learning what you may not have heard before. All the Republicans on here know what that feels like. To be outcast.
But I defend the right of my enemies while they don't return it because freedom of speech requires all speech to be defended. Yes, even those who hate you. When I left the left, it was like jumping into the 60's, when a new youth was coming in, and hearing other sides they didn't think were possible (and to be honest, the people who voted for Trump in 2016 were democrats, too). I want to be challenged and hear what everyone has to say. I don't like what Vaush (don't get me started on his views of underage porn, because I don't like that either) and Hasan Piker (the guy literally ate brains so if that tells you what his mind state is like, so be it) say but I will defend their right to say it. Because I defend all forms of speech. I don't choose sides either. I protect EVERYONES speech because censorship and banning books, art, never works out well. The religious right in the 90's didn't learn that lesson, and they gave up on it when they knew they couldn't ban video games or D&D.
The more Twitch, and big tech platforms will ban someone, even for using the word in proper context, and explanation, is what I am against (at least Vaush owned up to it and he accepted his punishment). Now, do I agree or like the two men above. No. But as the saying goes, "I disagree with you, but I will defend your right to believe what you want." As any Republican would stand against Abortion, adore the American flag, read the Constitution, the Bible, deserve to be protected too. Both sides need to be heard. Because speech is only dead when we stop talking to each other. Also, I don't believe that engaging with someone who is in fact trying to be an asshole in bad faith, deserve laughter, not scorn.
Here's something to think about: Why do you think the ancient Egyptians used symbols? Because symbols can be coopted. Think about that next time you use an emoji. Language breaks the boundaries of symbols, but also can lie about what symbols mean too.
