Ever since Kentaro Miura’s death on May 6th, 2021, Berserk fans always have theories about what might happen or yet turn the series in the next direction. It’s almost like blood sport for mangaka fantasy readers. The temptation to think too much about it might be like saying a witches name, as it will give more power than it should. But since this isn’t meant to be a set in stone prediction, the constant fear of Berserk being cancelled or just let go to fate and stopped is a fear that most Berserk fans deal with. It’s like our tongues get wet in anticipation and fear. The undiagnosed fear of a beloved series being cancelled or at least lost to time or discontinued is what most authors dread when they are gone. It’s a postmortem of a culture that captivates the death of the author, Kentaro Miura, but never the inner logic behind an entertainers thought process. But sometimes the process shows in the art, too, but never in didactic forms. But there are two things to consider in this argument: Schierke, and Rakshas.
To move away from that argument, it’s time to consider the role of Schierke. Schierke has shown true strength throughout the journey. She can create a shield for Guts, and the reformed Band of the Hawk, as she is the role of protector mage. Also she can use a wheel of flame. But Schierke, seeing the destruction of Elf-ham, by Guts own Dragonslayer, after trying to slash Griffith to pieces, except with each strike, it created a vacuum, sucking away the island. But Schierke couldn’t stop it. The ships they occupy are slowly sinking, too. And the only solution, after seeing Guts fall into despair, is simple. She must break through the armor, physically or with magic properties, to help Guts heal and find a way out of their predicament. She must become a powerful figure to Guts, as he’s now in the worst predicament since the first Eclipse. She can’t become Gut’s second if she doesn’t push through Guts Berserk armor. Shierke fixed Casca, now she must fix Guts. She must also, in her way, heal Guts after Slan injured him in the Troll fight.
The second character to understand is Rakshas, as the connection to Berserk, puts everything into question. Griffith is an unstoppable force of nature. But to destroy Griffith means understanding the narrative itself. For Griffith to be destroyed could create two quandaries. Guts finally meets Griffith as they must fight, and somehow, shatter Midland and Griffith’s kingdom. But the thing is, can you destroy an ubermensch, unless it can doubt its leadership. Berserk’s universe proves it’s once again cyclical, and understanding who can betray Griffith can also wound the Hawk of Light. But how could Rakshas betray Griffith and actually win. It seems impossible for Griffith to be taken down by one of his own, because he’s not going to open himself up to weakness again. Like he did with Guts Would this prove beneficial or at least foolish on Rakshas part?
Questions like this prove that two possible equations can come together, but sometimes, treading on the past, to a novice manga artist, can sometimes be more daunting than it should. Rakshas, is blood thirsty and vows to kill Griffith upon meeting him. But Griffith could kill him instantly, and the only reason why Griffith hasn’t killed Guts is because he sees him as his greatest challenge, but also a plot hole that Griffith must take care of, if he’s going to become the leader of Midland.
Griffith, in his powerful way, toys with Guts like a cat playing with a mouse, but not killing it. Guts, in a way, is a rat with its head stuck in a trap, and Griffith is just toying with Guts, as he’s dying. So, it’s not really important for Griffith to kill Guts outright. Griffith needs a champion to test his mettle. And the only way to attack Griffith is understanding that Griffith’s kingdom, in an easy narrative, might implode within. But Studio Gaga has an unbearable task ahead. It’s unbearable to even admit that the greatest manga creator, Kenataro Miura, has been dead, only makes the continuation of Berserk far more dangerous than it should be.
For many Game of Thrones readers, this is the fear that many readers have, because George R.R. Martin might just never finish the series, out of spite or just laziness. But to me, there’s a few things that have to be covered, too. As Farnese was ready to heal Casca’s mind, as she saw the damage her heart had been through, it’s time to fix Guts and heal the wounds made by Slan in the Goblin cave, hoping that he would use the Berserk Egg in order to corrupt Guts. Because if Guts isn’t at full physical strength, there’s no way he can face Griffith alone. Because as of April 13th, 2023, it’s going to take Schierke and Farnese to heal Guts. Not to mention the Holy See’s angel’s aspect might never have the light of day, either.
That’s the main order of business, but Guts is on a sinking ship, as Elfam is now destroyed. Any plans to heal Guts is out of the picture, but it’s all uncertain and unwritten. I guess it’s easier to hypothesize the fate of a series that’s still in limbo, as Koji Moure and the Studio Gaga team take constant breaks to plan ahead for the finale. But a finale without a direction or the wind picking up the narrative path of Causality again, Guts and Berserk, are in perpetual limbo. Not even Studio Gaga wants to finish Berserk, either, it seems. Because failure isn’t an option. And appeasing Miura fans, like myself, is the hardest task of all.
