Yara and Cuba: Two Sides of the Same Coin
-For the Uncensored!
Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro once stated, “A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past.” Ubisoft’s Far Cry series themes is the struggle between two polar opposites. A Hero and a Villain, and while Far Cry manages to blend the idea of hero and antihero, religious figures, and what society will do when forced into barbarism. Ubisoft’s newest fictional iteration of there popular Far Cry 6, explores the maddening cruelty of Anton Castillo’s haunting reflection of Communist Castro to life. Through violence and intimidation, Anton Castillo’s charm is equally as vicious as Fidel Castro.
Fidel Castro was born in August 13th 1926, a lawyer, a member of the Communist Party of Cuba, and an all-around bad person, whose bloody leadership is still reinstated long after his death on November 25h, 2016. Economic hurdles were Castros motivations as a leader, and blaming other countries for Cuba’s problems. In Far Cry 6, Giancarlo Esposito, whose roles included Gus from Breaking Bad, plays the titular character of Anton Castillo. According to NME.com, Giancarlo Esposito states, “The obvious choice to study is Fidel Castro and it is Cuba.” (https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/giancarlo-esposito-says-far-cry-6-character-anton-castillo-obviously-based-on-fidel-castro-2966180).
Unlike Castro, Anton Castillo’s Yara expanded to chemical cures, but Castillo’s intentions are like every dictator. A line from GZA in “Protect your Neck” “short arms and deep pockets” describes Anton’s true intentions. Both Anton and Castro promise wealth except the people suffer. In that respect Anton Castillo’s reign, like Castro, banned music, and ruled under the guise of a benevolent leader. Not much is known of Anton Castillo, but his charm led him to receive backing from the United States, creating the PG-240, which Castillo urges will cure Cancer. According to Juan Reinaldo Sanchez’s 2015 biography, Castro “had a lifelong passion, almost obsession, with cows and, starting in 1966, with bovine genetics and breeding. State media frequently published details of his attempts to breed cows with increased milk yields.” (Sánchez, Juan Reinaldo (2015). The Double Life of Fidel Castro: My 17 Years as Personal Bodyguard to El Lider Maximo (First U.S. ed.). New York: Penguin Press. ISBN 978-1250068767. P. 44). Or Ubre Blanca, a cow that revolutionized Cuba’s economic growth. But Cuban exile and poet, Ricardo Pau-Llosa, stated, “They were educated men,/how could they not know what was coming?/How could they not save Ubre Blanca/from the endless speeches, the cameras, and the fist?”
So, both men share the same passion for economic endeavors, but both yielded terrible repercussions. PG-240X killed and infected Yarans while Ubre Blanca was euthanized, ending its Special Period before its economic collapse.
But Anton Castillo’s keen eye for failed business is more aligned with Castros failed dictatorship. Anton’s entrepreneurial endeavors is where Yara better off, but the same bloodthirsty maniacal leadership is the key component to Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 and real life Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
