For writers, including Substack, find themselves in one more stressful admiration of writers who strike in order to find more palatable future deals. The outcome is that AI itself is at the forefront of another deal that other responsible parties then looks at their own self worth. Since 2023, major television shows have suffered because of it. Personally, television, as streaming channels are now the word, make up the bulk of television show writers. Nobody with a brain cell actually watches Jimmy Kimmel or late night comedians anymore. Youtubers, podcasters, are now what television writers should aim to be. Unless you’re late night comedians trying to make a podcast that ultimately will fail harder than late night comedy shows.
With this digression aside, the reality is simple. New terms have been reached. But like many terms reached between business partners, the new terms themselves do present some resolution to the problems many writers face with AI writing shadowing the human thought process. Some would think it’s cool but others a hindrance.
I fall into the camp that writers should be written by humans, and at this point, nothing else can be further from the truth. The terms themselves, reported by Culture Crave, and the few stated are spicy.
The first is simple. “AI can’t write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated material will not be considered source material.” Pretty straight forward. That basically states that no AI can rewrite literary work, and will not be considered source material. It’s like copying homework from the smart student, and should be considered thus. If your smart friend is a large database AI robot.
The second is a little more complex: “A writer can choose to use AI when writing services. It can’t be required.” This is when I call bullshit. A writer, under no circumstances, should be using AI to write their work. It should be the last option. Maybe if you’re old and invalid, and you can speak your words into a microphone. But still, if you’re capable, healthy, and willing to write, AI should be the last option a writer should do.
The third goes like this: “Studios must disclose to the writer if any materials given to the writer have been made by AI or incorporate AI-generated material.” This is when the writer must make re-writes as it’s required by the studio to tell them if AI has been used, so they could garner some extra re-write money, if it’s laborious shit writing, too. Then it must be fixed.
The fourth is the crucial aspect to the demands: “The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers material to train AI is prohibited by the agreement or other law” That itself is whether or not the WGA can tell if the writers work is created by exploitation through AI regulated techniques, and can be considered as exploitation, itself.
So, with this out of the way, the only real thing to consider is this: No living writer should be using AI unless your hands are broken and you can’t write. If you can write and your brain is working, you shouldn’t need AI.
This is how many digital painters must feel about AI stealing their paintings, too. So, I get it. So, just remember, not everything your machine tells you is real. And that writers are still needed in a very digital near futuristic age.
