Why Calling Me a Propagandist Won’t Stop me from Writing

On a rather innocuous night of being on Twitter, a place where debate is often seen as terrorism, I decided to criticize Stephen “Cringe” King, who was once one of my favorite writers, vocally speaks out against Donald Trump and Republicans. To a degree, in no certain words, I criticized how no one has been interested in his work since the 90’s. A woman decided to ask me a question, “where’s your manuscript” and I said, “You can find them all on my bio” and she went onto lambast a sentence from City of Sand, “the liberal world rejoiced when the Twin Towers fell” and she said, “No Sale” like that mattered to me, and I decided to just have fun with it.

            She called my work propaganda, and I said, “I’m an entertainer” and I just kept repeating the words. And it made me laugh a bit, because this was, as a line from Apocalypse Now’s character said, “was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500.” So, this went on for a few days, and I said, “Stephen Cringe has bias too,” to which she said, “His bias is for facts” and I felt like this was just arguing with a bot. Not a person. Turns out she was a corresponder, and I kept thinking, why didn’t she just ask me why I would write about a soldier claiming America back against Islamo terrorists. It didn’t make any sense, as this was not a debate, but a lambasting against me and my work.

            So, to end the conversation, as she claimed, “I was a professional writer for twenty five years,” to which I responded, “Professional. That’s funny.” Since then she has blocked me.

For a fiction writer, being called a propagandist is a hilarious yet almost tone deaf response to someone’s fictional work. Fiction writing has always blurred the lines of what is real and what isn’t. Truth in fiction is often boring work, and often doesn’t involve plot or metaphor. In the entertainment world, we call that “the message movie” where characters are bound to a certain ideology that involves society changing and presenting new ideas through film or other mediums.

            The problem is, that can be propaganda, too. But liberals, lefties, and democrats will often talk about “progression” but they are stuck in another time. For me, being a propagandist is not what I see myself as. It’s hilarious to think about. To be fair, George Orwell’s 1984 would have never been published in 2023, if the well intentioned liberals controlled big five publishers have anything to do with it. Funny thing is, all her anger didn’t amount to a viral overload.

            To summarize it is simple enough, for me. The same people who love Stephen King now, were the same people who hated him when he was just starting out as a writer. It was taboo to like Stephen King because he was actually trying to write disturbing fiction that disturbed everybody. The same goes for Philip K. Dick, a science fiction writer from the 50’s to the 80’s, primarily responsible for “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” which served as the basis for the Harrison Ford “Blade Runner” who lived his life through poverty, as he was only loved after he passed away in 1982. This is why I’m not offended by “professional writers” on the Internet talking shit about my writing until it’s finally acceptable through the media’s sources, like CNN or PBS or Oprah’s book club, which makes me laugh at how I’m called every name possible, but she did one thing right.

           She didn’t say I was without talent. Being a propagandist is hilarious because everyone, including news casters, can be susceptible to propaganda. And I’m still an entertainer, even if some don’t see me that way. And I’m okay with that. And I won’t be intimidated to stop writing, whether by political persuasion or online vitriol.
