The Trans Joke Outrage Continue with Rickey Gervais!
-For the Uncensored!
As a thinker, comedy happens in a bit of a happenstance like arena. Comedy, since Charlie Chaplin, went from the silent screen, to using gestures to illustrate a scene, to talkies, on stage, to George Carlin saying, “The Seven Dirty words you can’t say on television,” to Woke Comedy’s endless boring jokes that aren’t funny.
Ricky Gervais, right at the start of “SuperNature”, on Netflix, seems more sanguine. Older, but also willing to split hairs if need be. He makes fun of women, but he later explains the way a joke works. It’s hard for me to pretend that this isn’t a bummer for a comedy special, but British comedians seemed more willing to break the fourth wall than American comedians.
The whole idea that the trans community is upset, still seems like a weird case, to me. Gervais even explains that clubs “make you sign, saying he won’t say anything contentious or anything that could offend anyone,” and his ideas of apologizing are a joke. And his views on Woke Comedy is simple: “I tried to watch some of it and I decided I’d rather watch Louis CK masturbate.” So, this is already six minutes in.
The trouble is, already six minutes in, I don’t see anything as offensive as people should find it.
And his stance on apologizing, concerning Kevin Hart, is true. “if there’s no value to saying sorry and evolving, he might as well tweet them again. That’s how I deal with shit. But if you’re the type of person that revels in the type to get people cancelled, you’re just ensuring that one day you’ll be canceled for sommat you said today. You can’t predict what’ll be offensive in the future. You don’t know who the dominant mob will be.” Continuing he says, “The worst thing you can get canceled today, is Women don’t have penises.”
It gets funnier, as much of Gervais is against the idea of “words as violence” and describes the way overreaction and “virtue signaling” for the sake of protecting minority communities. And reminding the audience about the trans jokes, “we want to be included, so I include them.” Even he says, “I support trans rights” but “meet me half way ladies, lose the cock.” He goes to so far to imagine himself as a trans person named “Vicky Gervais” and it’s really hilarious. Because he can make fun of everyone, including himself.
What to me summarizes this whole comedy special is “People complain about things they don’t have to watch. It doesn’t affect them, you know? And, again, everyone’s got the right to be offended and complain, but they’ve gotta know we’re not trying to offend. That’s not our aim, you know? We’re trying to make you laugh. We’re trying to give you a good time. Here’s the deal. So I riff…if I say sommat tonight that’s so offensive, that you’ve never heard anything so fucking off the charts in your life, don’t make a scene. Go to the box office. They can’t give you your money back straight away. There’s a form you fill out with a complaint, and I take those away, and I shit on them. So, that’s the rules of comedy.”
I had to rewind this so many times to get this right.
So, if you’re at all offended, it’s probably because you didn’t watch the whole special. Because if people really do have a problem with this, you really don’t know what comedy is. Ricky Gervais is interested in offending everyone, but the leftist media can’t have that. Opinion after opinion piece will try and persuade you that the trans jokes are what is driving Ricky Gervais.
He even has a problem with believing in the supernatural, too. Even laughing about telling a sick child that there’s no heaven, and saying, “Is it a paid gig?”
So the world of comedy is not that simple. Ricky Gervais is not simple. His knife like precision of comedy is speckled with humor about love, animals, God, Hitler, masturbation, age, visiting the doctor, Cancer, Gym memberships, changing words to make fat people comfortable “they got fat on their own,” not being offended “nothing’s mental,” and being a well-rounded person. And AIDS, too. “Aids was the best.”
So, if there’s any offense is having to pretend that lamestream papers find this actually offensive. As it is, A Big Nothing Burger. As is Woke Comedy. And if you’re extremely woke, you won’t be changed, but maybe you will. Maybe learn to fucking laugh once in a while and you won’t be offended.
Would I watch it again? Hell yes, as you should, too.
