-For the Uncensored!
Episode 5 “Endure and Survive” opens up with Joel and Ellie meeting Sam and Henry, as this hopefully might not be as disappointing as Episode 4’s “Please Hold my Hand.” But we’ll see if this actually improves or not.
We get a nice preview of what it was like before Kathleen’s uprise in Kansas City. But Sam and Henry, in the midst of the chaos, communicate through sign. Kathleen’s a bitch, but to me, this character is as false as it is, gives a nice little speech to her prisoners, about her neighbors betraying her.
Henry has a .45 caliber handgun, and somehow, that should belong to Joel. It comes as no surprise that every single side character has Joel’s weapons before Joel did. Sam and Henry have a nice moment, but Sam was never deaf.
Overall, considering how long Sam and Henry are in the episode, they do have some good moments. Oddly enough Sam looks more like an eight year old and not 14, like in the game. The interaction between Joel and Henry seems to be the same, but they made Henry a collaborator between Fedra and the Kansas City Resistance. Not in the game, of course. And Henry never killing anyone is a lie, too. Sam having Luekemia is a lie, too, meaning, it was never in the game.
We do get to seen an interpretation of the Pittsburgh tunnel scene, after Joel and Ellie jump off it. We see the small little community that survived in the tunnels. Like in the game. We even see the Endure and Survive comic and the small note from the boy to his dad, “Dad protects.” Sam and Ellie have a small moment. They even play soccer, like in the game, too. But Henry is less pessimistic.
The sniper scene from Pittsburgh still made it into the series, but it’s at night, too, instead of day.
(Note: The Last of Us Remake Part 1’s Pittsburgh Sniper scene is iconic, but the sniper himself fights. The last scene still plays out the same, but this is a show of convenience, and not out of fan service).
The Clickers and Bloaters make an appearance through a fucking Emergence Hole! The Bloater makes an appearance and somehow, it fails to impress me, as they kill off the Kansas City Resistance hunting them.
The Bloater makes an appearance and somehow, it fails to impress me, as they serve as a distraction to kill the Kansas City Resistance hunting Sam and Henry. And appearing out of that emergence hole and somehow ruins it for me, still.
The Ellie and Sam conversation, remains, but Sam being denied his last moment, and Ellie reveals her immunity, while trying to heal him, is sweet. But Sam still dies, and it’s fast. But the camera pans away.
(Note: This scene represents that emotional core between Joel and Ellie, as both Sam and Henry were always meant to remind the stakes Joel and Ellie have to endure.)
Letting the actors play off the sadness. But to me, it doesn’t affect me the same, because as a player, it’s still moving because I was playing it.
Final Analysis: 1.0/5
Pros:
The Endure and Suvive Comic make an appearance.
Same still dies, which is from the game.
The note from the tunnel survivors that reads, “Dad Protects” makes an appearance.
The tunnel community makes an appearance, and Ellie and Sam play Soccer, which happens briefly in the game.
Cons:
All the negative aspects of the game are washed over.
Sam having Luekemia and becoming deaf is not in the game.
The fucking Emergence Hole ruins this episode!
The Sniper Rifle scene is neutered, as it’s an old man, who can’t fight at all.
