Oscars 2022: Losses, Wins, and the Wild Wild Slap
-For the Uncensored!
Okay, before we get into the obvious news regarding Will Smith, I think a congratulations are in order for a few films that actually deserved there nominations. Dune, the classic science fiction series, by Frank Herbert, made into a loving operatic rendition by Denis Villeneuve, won six awards, including the score by Hanz Zimmer and Cinematography by Graig Fischer. The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch and Carolyn Giardina on March 27th, 2022 report, Dune’s wins were, “cinematography, editing, score, visual effects, production design and sound.”[i] Losing its remaining five nominations to lesser films that no one ever heard of.
It’s hard for me to be more than ecstatic, but I haven’t watched a single Oscar Ceremony since 2005. Like a beleaguered vet, I get the updates online. Nothing is worth seeing than a bunch of jerks off in a big circle jerk. The people who rightfully deserved director nominations weren’t nominated. Guillermo Del Toro wasn’t nominated for his crime noir film, Nightmare alley (2021).[ii] Also missing for nomination was Denis Villeneuve as best director for Dune.
What I can’t seem to figure out is that how the hell anyone actually agreed to go to the Oscars, since the actors wanted to boycott it since no one was allowed to vote beforehand on what film was nominated or not.
Another troubling thing is giving out major awards an hour before hand that didn’t seem to make it to the live showing. Both Couch and Giardina report, “In a controversial move, this year’s Oscars presented eight categories an hour before the official telecast, with the speeches later edited into the show. Dune took home multiple statues during that pre-show hour,” which does lead me onto the main beat of the headline.
Will Smith’s alleged bitch slap with Chris Rock saying an off color joke, and Will Smith pretending to have base in his voice after he slapped him and said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth” after Chris made a really soft joke about Jada Pinkett’s hair, as she is bald. “Jada I love, but GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” It’s really rather quaint and tame and not even as offensive as Chris Rock could be. So, to warrant a staged bitch slap is quite hilarious. Chris Rock didn’t even seem that phased. If Alopecia is the cause of Ms. Pinkett’s woes, it’s not the end of the world, Ms. Smith can still wear a wig. When she isn’t off with random women and men.[iii]
It was quite entertaining, but people thought this was live. This is just speculation, but to me, this might give credence to the idea that Will Smith’s outburst wasn’t staged. But then, knowing that awards were given out an hour before hand, the cameras were still rolling. And for some reason, Will Smith can’t take a joke about his wife’s baldness. And if she has alopecia, that’s fine. Stars need to make up stories about themselves in order to look good or at least have people talking about themselves. It happens. It’s not so obtuse an idea to think about.
Everything is staged. Everything is fake in Hollywood. Even the decals are as fake as they come. It’s all right to feel offended, and that’s okay, but the whole idea that Will Smith needed to do something to get people talking about him made sense.
I think I summed it up perfectly in a comment I made, “I slap my steak harder than Will Smith can bitch slap someone.”[iv]
And to be honest, Will Smith’s best performance was that slap that he gave to Chris Rock, because like I said, he’s an actor. And all the hype around it seems undeserved. When Dune was robbed and so was Guillermo Del Toro for Nightmare Alley.
So, just remember, everything gold is shit. And Hollywood is full of tinsel, and more tinsel.

[ii] I did review the film, but it is only available to paid subscribers.
[iii] That’s not a lie. It’s true. Will and Jada have an open marriage.
[iv] Cope, if you’re offended, too.
