Last of Us Season 1: Episode 8 “When We Are in Need”: 3/5 “The Episode We Needed”

Episode 8 brings us to Ellie, now surviving on her own, trying to find food for them. David, in the game, is from the Pittsburgh QZ, which isn’t in the game, at all. His back story as a teacher turned to preacher, and they fast forwarded through the infected fight. It was pretty memorable, and somehow they managed to fuck that up. David isn’t creepy enough, either. But also more sincere, almost calm, and less villainous.
(Note: Ellie and David fight the infected, before he puts two and two together that Joel and Ellie killed his men at the college)
Also, James, in the game, is a teenager. James, in the show, is played, by none other than Troy Baker, the original voice actor and motion capture actor, for the original game. It made little sense that they would cast an older person to play the role, but it’s not that he can’t play the role, it’s because he’s too old.
Joel, somehow, gets better within two minutes after David’s men capture her. The fight sequence Ellie experienced is taken away, which proves again, was conveniently taken out. Joel’s intimidation scene is kept, and somehow still as thrilling as it was in the game. Also, Ellie spies a small ear, and she realizes the Silver Lake Crew, run by David, are eating people. But David is given the chance to be a creep far more than in the video game. Joel finding the dead people is still in the show.
(Note: Ellie and David fight in the game is better than in the show. But then again, this just an example how the show would never be able to reach the game’s intensity.)
The David/Ellie fight is rather simplistic. She starts a fire with a piece of wood from the kitchen. But here, it’s pretty simple. But we miss out on Joel killing half the town from the game. So, this is quite actually the best episode in terms of sticking with the original game. While making some conveniences in order to condense the game.
Pros:
Bella Ramsey and Troy Baker are excellent.
Silver Lake is impressive.
Cons:
Most of the clicker and infected fights are missing.
