-For the Uncensored!
The Third Episode of Last of Us devotes an entire episode to Bill, who is the disgruntled old man, who is more of a bad ass in the video game. Nick Offerman delivers a rather compassionate but very disingenuous perspective that most gamers remember him for. A grizzled survivor as he was dejected by Frank, who stole his car battery, and meant that Joel and Ellie would help him clear out the town in order to get said battery.
In the episode, it almost presents a fairly weak concession of what Bill is. He’s a person who didn’t care when the world went, but had hope when Frank came to him. Only Bill, at the end of his days, decides to kill himself with Frank. It’s not only deceptive, but it creates a show that deviates into almost saccharine portrayal that gamers don’t remember him for.
Nick Offerman, for what he does, steals the entire episode, but it’s not as good as I expected it to be. They didn’t want to make Bill too unlikable, but found it easier to have him die in the end. Instead of being the grizzled survivor even when he tells Joel, after Frank is found after he was bitten, and committed suicide, “we square, then get the fuck out of my town.”
(Note: All the times Bill from the Last of Us game is being a bad ass)
It’s a show that puts little faith in the core audience’s memory, but wants to write over what the audience remembers. In the series, Bill leaves the car and battery parts for Joel, and they fade out listening to Linda Rondstat.
What makes this episode epically better or worse, is that the show is once again, riding on consessions rather than giving the audience what they want. Overall, still a middle ground show with little appeal for the gamers, as well.
Final Analysis: 2.5/5
Pros:
Nick Offerman steals the episode, but isn’t given much.
Moving performances but out of place for the series.
Cons:
Bill is sanitized for a general loveable feel, not as cruel.
Joel and Ellie are rarely in this episode.
