DMX: A Ruff Ryder and Rapper’s Rapper, Dead at 50
-For the Uncensored!
I think most rappers would honestly wish to be famous during there lifetime, because people get old and tired. But DMX, Earl Simmons, born December 18th, 1970, seemed to me the one artist who was struggling with the mortality of life, death, and the peril of being held to the streets but have a normal life. Much of my relationship to most art is through there medium, and rarely do I ever get to meet and talk to the artists that I truly like. If you count the asshats on Twitter, and celebrities I hated, but with DMX, there never seemed to be an easy road.
By the way, he was the one kid in lunch you would have feared. He carried a twelve gauge in his pants, and robbed kids of there lunch money. Yeah, he was the lyrics that he carried, and if you listen to his music, he didn’t make apologies for what he said. He was the one artist that you could play on your Ipod and just run or lift your heart out. It’s impossible to pretend that he didn’t matter.
What is impossible is that you can’t deny the talent and the range his music gave. He set the standard that rappers like the LOX would then follow in there raps. He almost made me feel like I was a superstar when I listened to him. The same man who made “Get at me Dog” made “Slippin” which still feels as pertinent a song about a man who is trying to change.
What DMX brought is his iconic voice, and his style was electricity to anyone who heard it. He is important to the history of Rap, and people will probably be listening to him longer than Joe Budden will have in his lifetime as an artist or podcaster.
