Background and Introduction

Many games that delve into any Middle Eastern conflict have a lot of background to cover before they even try to attempt what it would feel like to be in their shoes. No matter what the military might think about the Black Hawk Down level in the free online game Delta Force, it is pretty riveting. Voyagers Revenge, a Youtube channel, who makes intense videos on games of his choosing, uses each frame to capture the madness of the real life Black Hawk Down event.

For those who don’t know, Black Hawk Down, is a story about a military intervention gone wrong in Mogadishu. From October 3rd to October 4th, 1993, United States soldiers were ambushed by Somolian terrorists, and half of the platoon fought their way, block by block, out of the skirmish. But the situation escalated when an RPG shot a Black Hawk chopper out of the sky, creating more havoc, but the remaining soldiers fought their way to safety. The conflict itself lasted for 18 hours, as 18 United States soldiers died, 84 soldiers were injured, and only one resulted capture. Over nearly 133 to 700 Somali’s were killed in said conflict.

It’s harrowing to think that video games could explore the world of real life situations, just as Ridley Scott did in his seminal 2001 film adaptation of Mark Bowden’s nonfiction work, Black Hawk Down.

(Note: The Hans Zimmer theme song sticks with the viewers long after the film is over, and no matter what, it remains one of Hans Zimmers best theme songs)

Guns of Delta Force’s Black Hawk Down

The guns of Delta Force’s Black Hawk Down level’s show an extreme level of detail no other game studio has ever committed to the realism implied in the actual situation. None of the character models themselves resemble the Ridley Scott feature film. They all look like regular people and not movie stars. Most game developers follow what actors look like and then base the gameplay off what the actors look like. Because the player, in any game, wants to play the game after the cut scene is over. But the guns of Delta Force’s Black Hawk Down level are committed to realism, first. The character voice actors scream, “I gotta reload” as the situation of facing off in street urban warfare of Mogadishu.
