In Chapter 375, Guts is revealed to the crew, as they are all in disbelief, as the Bakiraka and Silat, who have taken over the ship. Daiba, the older man who had helped Rickert escape, is now aiding Silat. But Silat, who was bested by Guts, and stood aside in the Griffith/Ganishka standoff, knows he’s on the tail of Guts. The crew sees Guts as he’s in chains. Everyone is shocked. They can’t believe that Guts, there once powerful swordsman, the hundred-man slayer from the Golden Age, lived and fought the Godhand, is now captured. By his own self-defeating nature. Carrying the wounds of all his battles.
.
It’s such an emotional feeling. Seeing Guts tied up, as he falls down once again. I had to read it again just to realize the stakes. The way someone is so powerless.
But Isidoro, the young man he had trained, is livid. It’s exactly the way any fan of the series would say. He can’t help but say what everyone can’t say. “Is this it?” It’s an emotional reaction that is needed, as “get up” is what Guts would have said to Isidoro. It’s such a pivortal moment for Isidoro, as he has lost everything, too. To try and make Guts angry. But Rickert, his faithful companion through the approaches, and he can’t even believe this is Gut
s
.
But he calms them down, as he “must let them be seized for now.” The crew are in Kushan territory, and they are taken to an unknown holy land, almost like a fortress. “I’ll be waiting for you at the Capital” Daiba tells Silat, and the picture itself, places Guts in the center of causality. Roderick sees the Capital, where Silat and the Bakiraka will now enter the fight with Griffith. Like the story itself has been forcing Guts into this position. To be weak, for once, and maybe, this city could be his salvation. To help him reclaim his power and sanity back.
For Berserk fans, following Guts has almost been a pilgrimage. To see Guts from his inception as the child who couldn’t die, face off against the Godhand, build himself up after the Eclipse, now in the hands of fate. It’s not surprising that even now, I’m enthralled, emotionally, by how Guts has perservered, even in his most painful moments in “Berserk.” It’s hard to see it all collapsing, but maybe now, a true endgame is in sight. I used to think the elves/fairies would have a place in the story to fight Griffith, but truly, it might just be up to Guts to get himself out of the Berserker armor, and prove that he’s the main character of this story. It is nice to see Rickert, Silat, and the Bakiraka who is now playing his role, to help Guts become what he must be. Because if Guts is going to survive, everything is riding on Guts returning to his former, or at least, reassembled self.
