Berserk Chapter 371 Review: A Defeated Guts

Something about Berserk always does make me feel a different kind of way. If the kind of way means “watching Guts fall back into despair based on his own inadequacy” Chapter 371 is the comeuppance for Guts and maybe his entire time avoiding the plot of killing Griffith. Even Miura had a notion after finishing the Lost Children Arc, that this narrative would only end in destruction for Guts and Midland. Repeating the same cycle Skull Knight did, as the Berserk armor ate away his soul for vengeance. So, this is difficult because not only did Elfham become consumed by water, and the hopes of defeating Griffith become a Sisyphean act, it’s the ordinance of being for Guts. It seems that Guts had never truly prepared for this moment to happen. Thinking that he could run away forever and preparing himself for some final blessing of having a peaceful life didn’t come to fruition.
Griffith used the one advantage, anger, against Guts, to destroy Elfham, and always being ten steps ahead, didn’t even prod Guts to come and chase him. Griffith in that way is still holding Guts by the leash. Griffith wants Guts to play a game of chicken with his anger. It’s nothing preposterous in the guilty decision of being the only Ubermench in Berserk that thought he could wear the Berserk armor and come out unscathed. Did this Guts ever expect peace?
The most poignant expectation is that you expect Guts to get the fuck back up and fight. Chapter 371 ends with Guts giving into the Berserker armor, and losing himself to despair. Will Guts find the courage to forgive himself and get out of this funk? But the ultimate hypothesis that must be tested: Guts must ultimately come to a peace deal with Griffith, admit defeat, or use the Behlit and meet his grim fate. Because I don’t believe that Griffith, stealing Casca, means that she might be a “damsel in distress.”
Oddly, it does paint her in a different light. Maybe she might just leave Guts for Griffith. It’s entirely possible. And Guts wouldn’t have that, either. So, it could end either way.
