-For the Uncensored!
Okay, now that I have your attention, this is shocking to me. Writing is one of the only talents that allow me to breathe and relax. It’s hard to consider this is as real world issue. But apparently in America, hating white people is considered a righteous cause. No matter if the person is talented. A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates, a writer I don’t really care about either way, retweeted a New York Times Opinion piece by Pamela Paul, titled, “there’s more than one way to ban a book” as she retweeted the highlight of the Paul’s words, “a friend who is a literary agent told me that he cannot even get editors to read first novels by young white male writers, no matter how good; they are just not interested. this is heartbreaking for writers who may, in fact, be brilliant, & critical of their own "privilege.")”

This doesn’t represent readers on a national front. To be fair, this article does represent a mortal error in the world of opinion piece journalism. When Ms. Paul claims, “The caution is born of recent experience. No publisher wants another “American Dirt” imbroglio, in which a highly anticipated novel was accused of capitalizing on the migrant experience, no matter how well the book sells” truly something sinister is happening.[1] Because no matter what, publishers want to sell books, but the book industry is caught in a weird downward spiral. By making books a “safe space” only category it damages both the art and the artists.
No matter if I dislike someone, that speech must be protected. And while I’m probably on the watch list from JK Rowling and Margaret Atwood fans who can’t seem to read a book, the point is clear. No matter how much someone is insulted, money must be made, too. You can’t pretend Art and Commerce doesn’t exist.
If the rise of independent content creators is born out of a need to help white males, attacking white male creators only damages the conversation about the quality of the work, and focusing more on racial divide, and letting business suffer in the process.
It’s a hard animal to wrestle with. No matter what, the words of a writer are to be valued over the personal life in which they occupy the years on this earth. It’s damaging to white male writers who do write transgressive material are not even allowed. And that goes for white writers who write within the community guidelines.
Art is made by the fringe, and if this is how the trajectory of publishing has gone, I’m glad I made the decision to self publish. As I promote ads on Instagram, the numbers show that most of my readers are located predominately in the male and female readership from 18-24 year olds and females 25-34.
To reject talented white writers is a harmful paralysis on creation. If someone is not accepted they will only lash out on society that will reject them. Because the publishing and entertainment industry created this problem, and then they complain, “white males don’t want to read female writers” which is so untrue it’s almost laughable.
As a writer of more than twenty books, self expression is paramount to my life. It means even if no one sees it, my work is still out there. Having my own career means more to me than any seven figure paycheck or a cocktail party with rich and famous people who are just as nervous as you are.
So, it’s a weird thing to consider. But there is hope for male writers. And let their business suffer if they won’t cater or publish me. And don’t lash out at society young man, create, and publish. So that white male writers will flourish. As I am one of them. And we’re not dead yet, either. So, write, create, and publish.

"Privilege" is in quotation marks so I'd like to think she's aware of the absurdity of calling people privileged while lamenting their widespread discrimination. Either way, my initial reaction to seeing that quote was one of barely contained rage. It's hard to get mad at the white nationalists when he's more than likely simply reacting to be constantly under attack in this manner. How is he not supposed to be filled with rage?
The people who do this absolve historical racism of their sins as far as I'm concerned. You've established that it's okay. Not that it is but what leg do these puritans have to stand on. Where do they get off lecturing the rest of us on the crimes that only THEY seem to ever commit?
But, like you, I would much rather have a solid body of work I can look back on with pride than just be the safe and curated mouthpiece of the establishment. That's no career at all. And thank goodness we live in an age where smoozing with The Party isn't the only way to get eyes on you.
