-For the Uncensored!
The subtitle is a question that I think bears repeating. To Entertain or Politicize? It’s not that far out of reality that when you’re talking about a group of people, you’ll find that people always want something out of life. To find a group of people whom you think alike and want similar values. It’s what countries built their entire foundation out of. The consequence of principled questions like, To Entertain or Politicize, can turn an artists body inside out. For many disaffected liberal artist who were cancelled during the 2016-2020 entertainment purge, this becomes a weird but conflicting, tiring, exhausting, and outright fucking boring, question we all know the answer to. But to me, this is for lefties who can’t remember how to hold a fork correctly or even understand the concept of gender or try to remove words people understand.
Hollywood will Entertain, but at the cost of throwing all their craft and technique out the window in order to cram an oddly worded messages into it. It’s hard to pretend that messages won’t find their way into art. It’s what characters will always talk about. Who do they hate? Who do they spend an entire life with? When can I go to the grocery store? What is my life really about? Do I care about the homeless or autistic? Or both?
These are sometimes messages that appear in a book or piece of entertainment? These are good questions. Also questions about the future are applicable. What will become of society if it embraces censorship? How can I have a hero end this terrible conclusion? How can I overthrow a dictator who is ready to silence or exterminate a population who won’t go along with their plan? This is Entertainment, because big questions can be answered with a piece of art exploring the world that it might become or reject, all together.
But to politicize becomes once more a subject of growing concern. It’s hilarious that Disney will keep adding in gay characters to their work that might not add anything to the plot at all. I wouldn’t care if a character was bi-sexual as long as they had some power to give and perform great daunting tasks that will wow me in the end.
(for the lol’s I will let Gundam pontificate on this subject)
The Art of Subtlety is a hard trick to master for any artist. Sometimes it’s about how much steam you can exert before the old tricks become repetitive. To politicize sexuality, in fiction, is a growing trend in 2022 lamestream entertainment that is steadily declining. I don’t care what anyone does in the bedroom or a bathroom stall, just don’t expect me to join in, unless I am willing, that is.
I’m for a message, but if political writing is your thing, go be a journalist. But journalism is a joke in 2022. An artists’ duty is to remember the audience, and still become who and what they need to be. I don’t think that I can watch anymore political channels without having to discern what is bullshit and what is a good talking point. Because that’s where I leave the politics. On political channels.
To be fair, honest talking points do deserve credit. But, right now, my life and the rest of my life is concerned with Entertainment and asking, answering, and sometimes not answering, big questions. And sometimes, a message will be inside it. But if it doesn’t add to the plot or allow a bi-sexual alphabet character to change their opinion on an old issue, i.e. character growth, then it’s not going to work. Sadie in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a character who embodies the conventional perception of feminism, while being a fully fleshed out personality you could see and talk to.
But do I ultimately believe that it has to be either politics or entertainment? I want to be whatever I want. To be myself and no one else. And any artist worth their time should aim to be themselves, and nobody else.
