Art and Culture # 51: Why Censoring Dave Chappelle Won’t Work!
-For the Uncensored!
I do tend to talk about censorship and how pervasive it is in the American Culture in 2021. It’s sometimes from an individual standpoint, but also how a corporation will pretend to protect “feelings” when they are merely agreeing with the subject and moving on. When Dave Chappelle released, “The Closer” on October 55h, 2021, I often think, “what’s Dave gonna say this time?”
And I wasn’t let down either. His defense of DaBaby’s choice of words, and the feminist movement, “Let’s all wear black dresses and give them a piece of our mind,” and most of all the LGBTQ community. Yes, the Alphabet people. When Dave Chapelle says something, we should all laugh. Laughter is forbidden to lefties. They don’t care what the opposition thinks. The definition of Satire, according to Merriam Webster, states, with two definitions, “a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule and scorn,” and “a trenchant wit, irony, and sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.”[i]
What makes Dave Chappelle hilarious is that being offensive is an art form. Comedy is meant to be offensive and thought provoking. Benny Youngman and George Carlin both served prison time for their beliefs and what they said on stage. And that was from a more restrictive time.
Censorship is an ugly way of “owning” critics and the word “cancel culture” is another branch of the Marxist tree. It’s not what you should do. The LGBTQ community, once they charge you of a sing, won’t ever forgive you. But not all homosexuals believe in censorship. When he challenged them he said, “You think I hate gay people…I’m jealous of you. You have made so many advancements over the years that [we] would have been free a hundred years earlier.”[ii]
According to the Verge’s October 11th article by Zoe Schiffer, Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos, released a statement, “Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line. I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.”[iii]
What Censorship does is not allow or grant discussion on the topics Dave Chappelle presents. What he’s doing is unleashing words, not bullets, onto your psyche. If you can’t laugh, you must recoil. It’s a natural perception. Calling people “bigots and racists” aren’t going to work for the left or for me.
To the left, offense is a crime. For merely teasing or making fun of the LGBTQ community, it’s an immediate death sentence. But Dave Chappelle refuses to back down, and everyone else should too. If comedy is supposed to be funny, then drama should be serious. Dave Chappelle has always managed to blend the two. With his wit and sarcastic behavior allowing people to think the things we can’t say in polite society, art is supposed to allow you to do that.
When Censorship is used against entertainers, who are in the business of comedy, that always makes the mob angry. If defending Dave Chapelle means defending Freedom of speech, then this is an article I’m proud to write. Because if I don’t stand up for Dave Chappelle, someone won’t stand up for me. And Censorship is murder, even if you don’t believe it. It’s a self destructive act made by gate keepers who pretend to know better than you. And Dave Chappelle can’t be cancelled, twice.
