Art and Culture 41: Originality, Organization, and Censorship
-For the Uncensored!
I think plagiarism is always a subject that often people seem to overlook or ignore. If there’s a place for originality, you can’t ignore it. If originality is the case, then it must be pursued. Some filmmakers and musicians find it through sub-genre. I don’t live in the world of genre’s or do I consider that a viable place to categorize people. The definition of categorization is the system of classes into which something is organized.
Organization works when you know where to put a book or a film. After years of working in a library, there’s always a place to put things. If you wanted to find a book by Stephen King, you go to the K section. There has always been the debate where art should be. What was original is knowing where to place things. Even the library of Alexandria, in Egypt before the burning took place in 48 BC by Julius Caesar, knew where to put the scrolls (https://ehistory.osu.edu/articles/burning-library-alexandria).
What the indecision of originality professes is that where should art go? Where should your music or podcast go? What do you want to write about and why should you? So, let’s say you’re making music, but then you have to decide what you’re going to write. What should go with the tempo of the bass guitar, and how should the lyrics be said?
Censorship plays out in a few key ways. Editing is not the same as censorship when you decide to cut and reshape what you’re looking at. When it’s agreed upon and you have to find what it is you’re talking about. What censorship does is decided by a group that doesn’t have the best interest of your art at all.
What people often fail to consider is that on a typewriter, you have to make sure what you’re writing is going to be final. I would be really embarrassed to have to go back and rewrite a book on a typewriter, because you have to make the best decisions you can, and think it through.
On a computer, this makes the comfort of editing easier. Why should you care so much about what you put out? And how does Originality tie into Censorship? It’s because the mistakes you often make can come back to haunt you. If you’re fine at being a post modernist, and learning how to marry the Pynchonian style with your own, but find out what interests you, you are gold.
I would argue that anyone who wants to marry big ideas into modern society should pick up Graham Green and Evelyn Waugh. They are still men of there time but they knew how to talk about big ideas and subjects that concerned the modern era. John Le Carre does to a degree, but he can miss the mark, at times.
What originality means in the worldly sense is that censorship can push your creativity down. Unfortunately Conservatives have there own version of censorship. If the indecision of self censorship and those done by a company can both hinder the sacred art of originality.
But others will argue, “Well, nothing is original, it can’t be done.”
Maybe ponder these words, to the people who say these things to you. “Stop listening to those people.” Maybe just put on some headphones. Only the idiots who keep talking over your headphones really didn’t care about your well-being, in the first place. Sometimes it’s a boyfriend/girlfriend who doesn’t want you to be yourself, and let go of all the preconceptions you once held. Sometimes, growing up is part of learning to create and feel the freedom of being in touch with who you are.
Sometimes originality starts with a sentence that lifts you up out of depression or a mixture of images with language that’s fun to create. Sometimes it’s finding out that what you started, might not be what you intended to write or make. Sometimes, it can take years and patience when it comes to making what you perfect upon.
Part of being creative is building a raft and see where you can go. You’ll face waves, but the strength is what you find to fight off the waves as you continue your creative journey. What you bring to your work is your originality. Don’t look to the old to follow where your time is speaking directly to you. I started a poem called “Tweeting on a Typewriter” which I wrote on a typewriter.
I find it so invigorating to look at any machine and use my inspiration to make my magic sing. It doesn’t matter what machine you use either that can help you be original either. If there’s anything you need to know it’s the failure in never trying to fail that can prohibit you from reaching your true potential. It’s wasted potential that you wouldn’t even try to be original and the horror is that you didn’t even want to. It’s easier to live inside the lines instead of coloring on the wrong side of the page and create something new. I mean, if Millennials have style, the creatively bankrupt leftists need some erection in there diet.
